Keshiki in Computational Space
Generative aesthetics and the discovery of emergent form
I do not use computation to imitate the appearance of nature. I use it to establish a place in which form can arise through interacting conditions — a place whose outcomes I author without completely anticipating.
From composing images to establishing conditions
An artwork need not begin with a predetermined image. It can begin with materials, initial states, interactions, constraints, duration, and a rule for change. Authorship then lies not only in deciding a final form, but in constructing the conditions through which forms can occur.
In my work, fields evolve under fixed interactions. I write the law, test its consequences, remove operations that do not earn their place, and eventually seal it. Different initial conditions may then disclose forms that were not individually composed. The law is authored; each image is an event within it.
Keshiki: discovering what has appeared
In Japanese ceramics, keshiki can name the qualities encountered on a fired surface: flows of glaze, ash deposits, scorching, cracks, tonal variation, and deformation. These are not necessarily drawn one by one. They arise between prepared conditions and material transformation, and are subsequently seen as a landscape.
Keshiki is useful to me because it names two moments at once: the occurrence of a phenomenon and the act of recognizing it. The artist does not simply command an image into existence. The artist prepares, observes, and takes responsibility for what is received.
Resonance, not a single lineage
Ink bleeding into paper, tarashikomi, ceramic firing, Gutai encounters with matter, and Mono-ha attention to relations between things are historically distinct practices. I do not arrange them as a straight path leading inevitably to generative art, nor do I oppose a controlling West to an indeterminate Japan.
What interests me is a recurring structural possibility: an artist can act by preparing relations rather than specifying every mark. Computation does not inherit these practices by resembling their surfaces. It can resonate with them when rules, time, interaction, and observation become part of the medium.
Determinism and the unknown
Delegating formation does not require randomness. A deterministic system can reproduce the same result exactly and still contain consequences that its author did not foresee. The unknown here is epistemic: it concerns what the artist has not yet encountered in the space of the law.
This is why testing matters. I generate many unseen inputs, compare their behavior, remove interactions, examine failures, and disclose the population. Discovery does not release the artist from judgment. It makes judgment — what to seal, what to reject, and what to accept without exception — more visible.
The digital kiln and the exploratory kiln
I use digital kiln as a working metaphor for the computational environment. Initial states, equations, interactions, parameters, and duration enter the kiln; iteration supplies the heat; boundaries, layers, fractures, openings, and territories emerge from their transformation. The analogy is structural, not material: computation does not become clay or fire.
Because computational conditions can be varied and repeated, the kiln is also exploratory. The cycle is: establish conditions, generate, observe, compare, preserve, alter, and generate again. In this cycle the artist works partly as a system designer, partly as an experimenter and fieldworker moving through a space that the system makes possible.
These terms describe different parts of one practice. Jinen is the orientation: form arising through shaped but incompletely controlled conditions. The digital kiln is the computational environment in which that arising occurs. Exploration is the method by which I move through and test its possibilities. Keshiki is what I encounter and recognize after formation.
This also distinguishes the work by emphasis rather than by rigid category. It may use techniques associated with generative art, simulation, artificial life, or machine learning. What matters is not the label of the tool, but the order of attention: generation, phenomenon, discovery, meaning.
A practice of receiving
Nature is not a motif in this practice. The medium is the set of conditions through which something can form. I do not draw a territory; I construct a law in which a territory may appear. I do not illustrate a crack; I allow boundaries and stresses to produce one.
The work is therefore neither pure control nor passive surrender. I establish the environment, place computation into it like heat, and observe what becomes visible. I then test it, name it, and accept responsibility for presenting it. What appears was not waiting as a finished picture. It becomes keshiki through formation and encounter.
